Massachusetts Gift Guide

I noticed that my New England Gift Guides have been a little heavy on food and drink, but there is just so many yummy things in the North East! But will do a better job of adding goods along with the yum in the tum.

For the lad or lass in your life who is in desperate ned of a bag update, look no further than Boston based Forestbound. Founder and designer Alice makes her bags out of salvaged textiles, leather, and hardware she finds all around the area in the most likely, and unlikely, of places. She dedicates many hours to ensure that each bag is unique and durable enough to carry your daily haul.

For the foodie (fancy or not), you can’t go wrong with some Union Square Donuts. These donuts will change your life, and your idea of what a good donut is (I didn’t like donuts before I had one of these). Pastry chef pro Heather founded USD less than a year ago with partner Josh of Culinary Cruisers and have already become national donut legends. Swing by the shop in Union Square, Somerville to grab a gift card along with a maple bacon or cherry hibiscus (my two favorites) for yourself.

Any gentleman would be thrilled to receive a classic button front shirt made by the skilled craftspeople of New England Shirt Company. Like most New Englanders, New England Shirt Co. prefers comfort and classic over trendy. And they’ve been making them that way for 200 years in their factory in Fall River. Head here to find where you can pick one up in time for the holidays.

Despite what you might think, not everyone has a cutting board. Or at least a good cutting board. Husband and wife duo Peter and Katrine make beautiful cutting boards (along with other home goods and furniture) for their brand Structure Design Build in Roslindale. Their cutting boards are handcrafted out of New England maple, oak, and walnut and treated with food safe oil.

Help out the family member who is always losing their keys and give them one of Corter Leather‘s Bottlehook keychains. Bonus, the belt loop key hook is also a bottle opener. Eric, the founder and designer, makes all his leather goods by hand at his home on the Cape. Yup, it’s a one man operation that turns out all those belts and wallets that you see around the Boston area. Be impressed.

Shameless plug here, but also makes a great gift. Why not grab a poster of the illustration I designed for Rohan Anderson’s first book Whole Larder Love? Letterpress on chipboard by printer extraordinaire Mike of Repeat Press in the Fringe Studios of Union Square, Somerville.

Circulate//Accumulate by Katrine Hildebrandt

My lovely friend Katrine Hildebrandt has a solo show opening today at The Hallway Gallery in Jamaica Plain, MA. She’s an incredibly talented artist and along with her husband Peter Hussey, they make amazing pieces for their shop Structure Design & Build. I have a feeling her solo exhibit will be nothing short of amazing as well. The opening reception is from 6-8 tonight. Below is Katrin’s artist statement:

“The ocean has become truly important to both my work and life in the past several years. I’m interested in the movement, currents and circulation of water. Pushing and pulling with an energy and force that can change the patterns of matter. Through my work I wish to express the pulse of the sea. With each new wave a circulation begins, accumulating its findings on the land, only to pile up and fade away.”
