Typically shag rugs can be made from cotton acrylic polypropylene and nylon and are available in a host of colors to suit every taste and need. These rugs all have a similarity in appearance in the sense that their texture and appearance consist of strands of knotted material. These are either short or long in appearance or a combination of both.

A genuine shag is made with long pile strands or with a mixture of long medium and short pile attached to backing. These variable-length strands give shag its distinctive cloudlike look and feel. Such a three-dimensional character brings texture and interest to smooth surfaces like hardwood and tile floors in an instant.

One thing we have as yet neglected to mention is that Flokati rugs are made with the wool from sheep that call either New Zealand or Greece their home. Our next rug we will be looking at is the Aros rug which like the Flokati is made from the wool of sheep in New Zealand. Shag rugs work really well in living rooms because they can anchor the sofa and a coffee table and such that is on wood or stone floors. A lot of the time furniture can look like it is floating in a room if there is not something with depth to hold it down or give it some definition and a shag rug is great at that. Many of the shag rugs that are used in living rooms are quite neutral in color but simply tie the room together and make it look more comfortable even if the flooring is very hard and even cold looking.

Cleaning a shag area rug is simple just shake them well to remove the excess dirt or simply fluff the pile on a regular basis but occasionally you can use an vacuum cleaner with beater bar attachment but never use the combs or teeth as the shag rug pile will get entangled. They can also be dry cleaned for deep cleaning of the pile. Wool yarn and blends repel dust naturally so cleaning and maintenance is easy.

Its important to find out that most people are not choosing to put in wall-to-wall shag carpeting. Shag rugs are used very sparingly but they are very effective in creating texture depth and warmth in a room. As popular as stone and wood floors have become in the main living areas rugs now need to have some more depth to them.

Today shag rugs are made from a range of materials including acrylic cotton nylon polypropylene or synthetic blends. One version is made from cotton jersey in thick and thin textures as well as long and short strands. This material results in a denser form of the rug sometimes can "shaggy" shag because the mixture of strand lengths and weights makes them look messier and more casual. Shaggy shags often appeal to college-age students for decorating dorm rooms or to teens for their bedrooms at home. Parents also have incorporated shaggy shags into playrooms and game rooms because their soft feel makes them perfect for lounging about on the floor.
