Date Night with Alex Grant: Midnight In Paris

And we’re back! After several months of working on some other projects and being busy adults (Skip is the real adult, I’m just faking), we’re back with a special Date Night for you all. Midnight in Paris is most likely my favorite film of the year. Although I have yet to see the Muppets, so I’ll get back to you on that. Woody Allen charms yet again with an impeccable script and an amazing cast. I immediately fell in love with the small but charming character Gabrielle, whom French actress Léa Seydoux plays. I won’t give the plot away too much, but her role is quiet important in the end. What really makes this Date Night special is that we have a very special guest, and friend, Gabe Alonso of The History of My World and Pleats Are For Lovers fame. Gabe is a music genius and has created a fitting playlist for us. Be sure to head over and download it. And of course, don’t miss Skip’s look for Owen Wilson’s character Gil over at Alexander Grant! He’s even included a link to a literary study guide for you so you can impress your date.

Date Night with Alex Grant: Big

For this Date Night, Skip asked for a movie from the 80s and I figured, who doesn’t enjoy Big! Sometimes you just need to let your inner kid out and be more fun, especially on a date with someone you like. Head over to Alex Grant to see Skip’s look of Josh as a kid.

Date Night with Alex Grant: The Talented Mr. Ripley

The Talented Mr. Ripley is certainly a favorite for the amazing acting and wardrobe. It’s constantly cited as a source of sartorial inspiration. Obviously, this makes it a perfect addition to the Date Night Series. I love everything Gwyneth Paltrow wears as Marge Sherwood in the film. She is elegant and classy, but cool and relaxed at the same time. The perfect balance for a woman. Check out Skip’s look here.

Date Nate with Alex Grant: The Social Network

After a nice spring vacation, Skip of Alex Grant and I are back with our Date Night series! Being a Harvard man himself, Skip suggested we do The Social Network. Here is Mark’s slighted ex-girlfriend Erica Albright’s typical look. I updated it a little to make it more seasonless with a lighter weight jacket, but all in all it’s the perfect bookish look for a date at a low lit pub or a cafe. Head over to Alex Grant to see Skip’s look for Mark Zuckerberg.

Date Night with Alex Grant: Groundhog Day

Part two of this week’s Date Night with Alex Grant: Groundhog Day. The always lovely Andi McDowell as Rita from Groundhog Day. Keep in mind, this movie was made in 1991 so I wouldn’t necessarily recommend wearing the silk vests and billowy blouses that she wears in the film. But you can’t go wrong with a barn coat like the one she wears in this shot. And replace the oversize puff blouse with a men’s shirt. It will be cut straighter and will be more comfortable than any of your women’s shirt. I recently bought a men’s Freeman’s Sporting Club white button front shirt in their XS and I have barely taken it off.

Date Night with Alex Grant: Groundhog Day

Skip wasn’t able to join us this week for Date Night (he’s busy kicking butt in the legal world!) but he agreed that our beloved series couldn’t miss out on doing Groundhog Day this week. Who doesn’t watch this cult classic five times back to back every February 2nd? I’ve put together pieces for both Ned and Phil because I honestly couldn’t pass up on this screen shot of the two of them. Check back in a little later for Rita’s getup.

Date Night with Alex Grant: Jaws

In a way, Jaws is the movie that began it all. In my early days of blogging, I had put together a post about the fantastic menswear from this cult classic. Skip reached out to me as a fellow Jaws enthusiast and suggested we do a collaboration of curating styles inspired by great films. Hence, Date Night was born and the rest is history. As a special Date Night issue this week both Skip and I have offered up double hitters. Head over to Alex Grant for Matt Hooper and one of the prep kids and keep reading for Ellen Brody and Sam Quint. Just keep in mind, if you’re going to try and rock Quint’s seafarer’s getup, don’t forget to wash your clothes in salt water and sand them down with some beach sand. There’s no cheating with this look if you want that real weathered appearance.

Date Night with Alex Grant: The Brothers Bloom

I really love the film The Brothers Bloom. I found it’s one of those films that none of your friends have heard of or seen but you watch it every time it’s on HBO because Rachel Weisz is gorgeous and the wardrobe is fantastic. I wish I had Penelope’s (Rachel’s character) closet. It’s the perfect mix of menswear and old Hollywood glamour – complete with chunky lace-up boots, bowler hats, wool capes, leopard, scarves, and skateboards. Don’t miss Skip’s look for Adrien Brody’s character Bloom. Now that’s how a gentleman dresses.

Date Night with Alex Grant: Rushmore

After a much needed rest period (we had a very busy holiday season!), Skip and I are back with our Date Night series. We’re also mixing things up a bit, Skip will be posting the men’s looks on his blog Alex Grant, and I’ll be posting the ladie’s looks on mine. Both will be posted on Fridays going forward. This week Skip recommended Rushmore, an iconic Wes Anderson film – he’s a #1 fan, if you couldn’t already tell! Head over to Alex Grant to check out and here is a bit of Rosemary’s style from the film.

Date Night with Alex Grant: A Charlie Brown Christmas

For part two of Date Night with Skip for Charlie Brown’s Christmas I put together a look for Linus. As we all know, Linus is quite a young fellow at heart so I matured his look a bit with some items a grown man would value during the cold winter months. And the security blanky has been upgraded to a beautiful wool throw from Swans Island up in Maine – perfect to wrap around the shoulders of your loved one when it gets chilly out.

Date Night with Alex Grant: A Charlie Brown Christmas

Skip was inspired while watching A Charlie Brown Christmas today with his adorable children – and it shows with this great outfit. I absolutely love the brick red Penfield jacket with the dark rinse denim, blucher mocs, and stormy kromer hat. The perfect winter look for a young boy or an older man.

Date Night with Alex Grant: Home Alone

Who doesn’t love watching Home Alone around the Holidays? It’s the perfect movie to get you feeling all nostalgic for your youth, while at the same time making you wish you had been more plucky as a kid. Skip brings  Culkin’s iconic style from the film to life with Bean essentials, Sebagos, and the best Christmas present in the world – a Red Ryder BB Gun (more on that in another Date Night coming soon). If you have kids, make sure they wear this outfit. If you are an adult without kids, make sure you find the big kid versions of these pieces (the BB gun is one size fits all) and wear this outfit.

Date Night with Alex Grant: Fantastic Mr. Fox

We have a very special Date Night for you this Thanksgiving weekend – Fantastic Mr. Fox with a soundtrack created by our talented friend Mr. Gabe Alonso. Click here to download the soundtrack, a perfect selection of tunes for this festive season and for getting into mischief like Mr. Fox himself. Skip went all out with some great L.L. Bean pieces to recreate Mr. Fox’s quintessential country gentleman look. If you want to make this look as authentic as possible, I advice growing out some whiskers, especially if your hair is of the red variety.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

Date Night with Alex Grant: Annie Hall

Skip hit it out of the park yet again with this great look from Woody Allen in Annie Hall. Like Diane Keaton’s outfit, this look will take you through practically every date. Whether it’s a movie, picnic, or nice cup of coffee on a sunday morning, you’ll have that great easy and classic look that Woody Allen pulls off so effortlessly.

Date Night with Alex Grant: The Royal Tenenbaums

Margot Tenenbaum is such a great character, and one of my favorite roles for Gwyneth Paltrow. This look practically carries Margot through her entire life. Add a great fur coat and classic penny loafers with some feminine touches like a Kelly bag, little dress, and some barrettes, and you’re golden for whatever the day’s got for you. Well, maybe not everything, but you’ll definitely look cool.

Date Night with Alex Grant: The Royal Tenenbaums

As the holidays roll in we thought it would be fun to start concentrating on family oriented films for Date Night. And what family is better for style inspiration than The Royal Tenenbaums!?  If you read Skip’s blog Alex Grant on the regular (of course you do), you’ll know that he’s a big Wes Anderson fan. But then again, who isn’t? Especially when Anderson’s films are filled with quirky wardrobes and characters. Skip picks the most memorable outfit of Luke Wilson’s character Richie. Take note on how to make a smooth transition from the tennis courts to your dinner date.

Date Night with Alex Grant: Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner

I’m actually in love with Katharine Hepburn’s wardrobe from the film but I think this look for Joey is perfection with the feminine blouse and tailored orange wool pants. Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner was actress Katharine Houghton’s first film role, and she is adorable in it. I’m sure having Katharine Hepburn as an aunt helped with the acting chops (if you didn’t notice the similarities in their faces before, now you will). This is the perfect outfit for meeting the parents or for a festive Thanksgiving meal.

Date Night with Alex Grant: Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner

Thanks to Brian Buell for the excellent Date Night suggestion. Sidney Poitier is one of my all time favorite actors, and he is absolutely fantastic in the classic, Guess Who’s Coming To Dinner. And with Spencer Tracy and Katharine Hepburn as supporting actors, this film is a real gem. Skip did an amazing job putting together the look of young and dashing Dr. John Prentice. You may not be a doctor yourself, or as down right good looking as Poitier, but you certainly have no excuse not to get your hands on a perfectly tailored navy suit, classic tie, and gentlemanly behavior.
