There was a time not so long ago when having shag rugs immediately marked a rooms decor as outdated. Today however shags have reclaimed their former glory as the epitome of artsy cool.

Consumers using silk rugs have a tendency to place them areas of high traffic and soil buildup. Unlike most area rugs silk rugs cannot be steam cleaned because of the delicate silk. The texture can become distorted and the fiber water damaged from the cleaning. They can only be cleaned with a special dry cleaning solvent by hand. This process will not remove the heavy soils and stains that occur in a high traffic or soil area. After a relatively short period of time you will have a very expensive area rug that will not look very good. If you still want to place a silk rug in these areas it is recommended that it be solvent cleaned every 3 months and to turn it to change the traffic pattern. This will expand the pretty part of its life. NEVER place it by your front door. The rain or snow moisture will permanently damage the silk. Wherever you place it a thin gripping pad under it will keep it from sliding and help slow down the wearing of the silk.

Remember when shag rugs and shag carpeting was a cultural staple during the disco era of the 1970s? And remember that they only came in the most obnoxious colors like brick orange and swamp green? Aside from the strange color choices no one could really deny the softness and comfort that made shag rugs and carpeting popular. With that said shag rugs are making a strong comeback in the home decorating market and why wouldnt they? Unlike ordinary rugs shag rugs add that extra pop in style for any home.

For fun in a family room or childs room add one or more brightly colored shags made of olefin. These rugs are inexpensive stain and fade resistant. Children would love to have some of the bright colors such as fresh nectarine purple berry or lime green added to their room. Alternating two electrifying colors in a block pattern adds even more spark to the room. A brightly colored striped shag instantly invites fun into the room. Shag rugs made from cotton tee shirt strips can also be a unique and colorful addition to a room with casual decor.

Its official - shag rugs are back! These rugs were a big part of the 1970s design culture along with patterned wallpaper and lava lamps. And although Im not advocating for a complete retro rewind this is one 70s style whose return Im happy to celebrate. Heres why!

One shag area rug that will cost you just that little bit extra though is the leather shag rug - usually made from cow hide or suede... or a combination of both. Like the Love Fur this shag rug is new to the scene but has already made quite the impression among those members of society who deem themselves a bit more refined.

One thing we have as yet neglected to mention is that Flokati rugs are made with the wool from sheep that call either New Zealand or Greece their home. Our next rug we will be looking at is the Aros rug which like the Flokati is made from the wool of sheep in New Zealand. As such its texture is as soft as the Flokati but has its own unique appearance and manufacturing technique.

Shag rugs are rugs that have a deep pile much deeper than the average rug. Translated into everyday language this means that the rug is thicker because the yarn strands are longer. This is why these rugs are sometimes referred to as shag pile rugs. The result of these longer yard strands is addictive luxurious comfort. These are rugs you can really sink your feet into!
