Consumers using silk rugs have a tendency to place them areas of high traffic and soil buildup. Unlike most area rugs silk rugs cannot be steam cleaned because of the delicate silk. The texture can become distorted and the fiber water damaged from the cleaning. They can only be cleaned with a special dry cleaning solvent by hand. This process will not remove the heavy soils and stains that occur in a high traffic or soil area. After a relatively short period of time you will have a very expensive area rug that will not look very good. If you still want to place a silk rug in these areas it is recommended that it be solvent cleaned every 3 months and to turn it to change the traffic pattern. This will expand the pretty part of its life. NEVER place it by your front door. The rain or snow moisture will permanently damage the silk. Wherever you place it a thin gripping pad under it will keep it from sliding and help slow down the wearing of the silk.

Material. Shag rugs are made in a wide variety of different material including wool chenille sheepskin leather olefin and even recycled t-shirts! When choosing a material you should take into consideration a few different things. Will the rug be located in a high traffic area? If so then you will want it to be made of durable material that can withstand a lot of foot traffic. Olefin or another type of synthetic material may be your best choice. If your plan is to use a shag rug to add warmth to a room then a high pile flokati rug may be an option to consider. Flokati rugs are made of 100% wool and come in piles as high as four inches adding softness and warmth to any room.

A genuine shag is made with long pile strands or with a mixture of long medium and short pile attached to backing. These variable-length strands give shag its distinctive cloudlike look and feel. Such a three-dimensional character brings texture and interest to smooth surfaces like hardwood and tile floors in an instant.

Finally shag rugs have branched out into a new material: leather. At first the thought of leather rugs can be startling but theyre ideal for a bachelors masculine abode or for an executive suite. Made of natural leather suede or a combination of the two these shags boast thick ruffled strands that result in a sturdy dense surface that holds its shape against all comers. Most leather shags come in the same dark colors typical of leather furniture: black brown tan chocolate and sometimes white or red.
