I had read about Upstate and seen images of their beautiful product this past winter somewhere and remember chanting to myself, remember this brand remember this brand (this was me pre smartphone). I was so relieved when I finally rediscovered them at the Levi’s shop on Newbury Street. Their product is even more beautiful in person. Founders Kalen Kaminski and Astrid Chastka hand dye each piece, resourcing their own interpretation of Shibori (an old Japanese tradition of dying using a variety of techniques) and dip dying, making every product they turn out of their Brooklyn studio completely unique. Check out this video of them doing their thing in their studio, directed by Jay Carroll as part of Levi’s Made Here series.
